# Payment exceeds the invoice balance

> A payment applies more money to an invoice than the remaining balance of the invoice.

Code `payment_exceeds_parent_balance`. The status is **Failed**.

> CargoWise applies 1200.00 MXN to INV-1042, but its remaining balance is 800.00 MXN. Fix it in CargoWise and resend the document, or stamp it by hand.

## What it means

A <Tooltip tip="Payment complement. A CFDI that records a payment on a PPD invoice.">REP</Tooltip> shows the balance of each invoice before and after the payment. The SAT does not accept a payment that is more than the balance before the payment. Transitive calculates the balance from the invoice and from the earlier payments on that invoice.

## Cases

### The invoice has a balance

The payment is more than the remaining balance. Look for an incorrect amount, or for an earlier payment that applied too much.

### The invoice is fully paid

> CargoWise applies 1200.00 MXN to INV-1042, but that invoice is already fully paid. Fix it in CargoWise and resend the document, or stamp it by hand.

Earlier payments paid all of the invoice. Look for a duplicate payment, or for a payment that CargoWise applied to the incorrect invoice.
