# Stamp a document

> Stamp a document with Auto or By hand, and know when you cannot stamp.

Usually, Transitive stamps each document automatically. Use **Stamp** when you must stamp a document yourself, for example after a failure.

## Methods

| Method | Data | Use it when |
| - | - | - |
| **Auto** | The data from CargoWise. | The data in CargoWise is correct. |
| **By hand** | The data from CargoWise in a form. You can edit it. | You must correct the data and cannot use CargoWise. |

## Stamp a document

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the document">Open the document in the correct environment, test or live.</Step>
  <Step title="Select Stamp">Select **Stamp**, then select **Auto** or **By hand**.</Step>

  <Step title="Edit the data (By hand only)">
    Examine the data in the form and correct it. Then submit the form.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the result">
    The status changes to **With the stamping provider**. When the provider stamps the CFDI, the
    status changes to **Stamped**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## When you can stamp

**Stamp** is available only if:

* The current version has no valid CFDI.
* No other step is in progress for the document.

For example, you can stamp a document that is **Queued**, **Failed**, **Missing**, **Not stamped** or **Cancelled**.

## When you cannot stamp

**Stamp** is not available in these conditions:

* The document is with the stamping provider. A second stamp can make a second CFDI.
* The result of an earlier stamp is unknown. Transitive must first find out if the provider made a CFDI.
* A stamp by hand is open, and you did not submit it.
* The document waits for the cancellation of a related document.
* The document is a receipt reversal. A reversal has no CFDI.
* The document is a **Not received** entry.

## Where the new CFDI goes

* If the current version has no CFDI, the stamp is a new attempt on that version.
* If the SAT cancelled the CFDI of the current version, the stamp starts a new version.

Refer to [Versions and attempts](/concepts/versions-and-attempts).
