# Correct a failed document

> Find the cause of a failed document and correct it.

A document is **Failed** when Transitive cannot stamp it. The failure code tells you the cause and how to correct it.

## Correct the failure

<Steps>
  <Step title="Read the failure">
    Open the document. Read the title and the message of the failure.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find the code">
    Find the failure code in [Failed statuses](/reference/statuses/failed). The page of the code
    tells you what it means.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the timeline">
    Open **Timeline**. If the PAC or the SAT rejected the document, the timeline shows their code
    and message.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Correct the cause">
    Do the steps on the page of the code. Usually, you correct the data in CargoWise and send the
    document again. Or you stamp the document by hand.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What occurs next

* When CargoWise sends new data, Transitive examines the document again. If the data is correct, Transitive stamps it automatically.
* When you stamp the document by hand, the stamp is a new attempt on the same version.

<Tip>
  If the same failure occurs again, compare the provider message with the data that you changed.
