# Choose a cancellation motive

> Select the correct SAT motive before you cancel a CFDI.

The SAT requires a motive for each cancellation. The motive is a fiscal decision. Select it before you cancel a CFDI.

## Select the motive

<Steps>
  <Step title="Did the operation occur?">
    If the operation did not occur, use motive **03**. Refer to [Cancel a
    CFDI](/guides/cancel-a-cfdi).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Must the receiver get a correct CFDI?">
    If the CFDI has errors and the receiver must get a correct CFDI, use motive **01**. Refer to
    [Replace a CFDI](/guides/replace-a-cfdi).
  </Step>

  <Step title="In all other conditions">
    If the CFDI has errors and you do not stamp a replacement, use motive **02**. Refer to [Cancel a
    CFDI](/guides/cancel-a-cfdi).
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The motives

| Motive | SAT name | Replacement |
| - | - | - |
| 01 | Comprobante emitido con errores con relación | Necessary |
| 02 | Comprobante emitido con errores sin relación | No |
| 03 | No se llevó a cabo la operación | No |

Motive 04 is for global invoices. Transitive does not use it.

## Motives that Transitive selects

Some cancellations start automatically. Then Transitive selects the motive, and you do not select it:

* A credit note with the same value as its invoice can cancel the invoice with motive 02. Refer to [Credit notes](/guides/credit-notes).
* A receipt reversal cancels the payment complement of its receipt with motive 03. Refer to [Receipt reversals](/guides/receipt-reversals).
