# Environments

> Each document can exist in a test environment and in a live environment. The two are independent.

Transitive has two environments: test and live. Each document can be in each environment. The two copies of a document are independent.

| Test | A test CFDI. It has no fiscal value. | Not sent. |
| Live | A real CFDI at the SAT. | Sent. |

## What is independent

In each environment, the document has:

* A status
* A timeline
* Versions and CFDIs
* A row in the document list

A change in the test copy does not change the live copy. A change in the live copy does not change the test copy.

## The document list

The list shows the live environment. To show the test environment, select **Test**.

## How a document starts in an environment

A document starts in an environment in one of two ways:

* CargoWise sends the document to a company that uses that environment.
* You promote a test document to live. The live copy starts as a new document at version 1. Refer to [Promote to live](/guides/promote-to-live).

## Test cancellations

The SAT does not know test CFDIs. Thus, in the test environment, the stamping provider gives the final result of a cancellation.
